Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said winning matters more to him than his sack total as the Chiefs prepare to return home after consecutive road losses.

Jones has half a sack this season, but he described his responsibilities Thursday as broader than finishing a play in the backfield. Kansas City is 5-2 after opening the season with five straight wins.

“And most important thing is winning. That’s the most important thing,” Jones said on Thursday. “Sometimes my job isn’t for me to go out there and get six sacks.”

Jones said sacks remain valuable, but his assignment sometimes involves creating opportunities for teammates to succeed. He discussed helping other players make plays rather than evaluating his work only by his own statistical production.

The Chiefs have nine sacks through seven games. Defensive end George Karlaftis leads the team with two, while Jones has 13 combined tackles, including six solo stops and seven assists.

Kansas City has allowed 674 rushing yards through seven games, fourth fewest in the NFL entering Friday. Opponents have converted 38 of 97 third downs, a 39.2% rate that ranks 14th in the league.

Those team results accompany a smaller sack total for Jones, who is in his 11th season with Kansas City. The Chiefs selected him out of Mississippi State in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft with the No. 37 overall pick.

Jones made his latest comments after Kansas City lost 20-3 at Seattle on Oct. 25 and 28-24 at Denver on Nov. 1. The Chiefs had beaten the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 in their previous home game.

The Jets arrive after three consecutive losses, most recently a 38-33 defeat against the Las Vegas Raiders. New York has allowed at least 26 points in each game during that stretch.

The Chiefs host the Jets (2-6) on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
