The Kansas City Chiefs certainly did not have the season they envisioned after reaching the Super Bowl a year ago. Just one season later, they finished 6–11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Compounding the disappointment, the Chiefs lost star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a season-ending torn ACL and LCL in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers, putting his status for the start of next season in question.

Mahomes, who was drafted in 2017, is experiencing his first season without postseason football. Since becoming Kansas City’s starter in 2018, he had reached at least the AFC Championship Game every year — games that are being played this weekend without him for the first time.

Despite the difficult season, the Chiefs made an exciting announcement centered around Mahomes on Saturday, officially naming him the Derrick Thomas Team MVP for the year, a decision that sparked some reactions from Chiefs fans.

“This franchise doesn’t deserve him,” one fan wrote.

Another added, “Heal up, 15! The Chiefs will be better when you return.”

“Duh! He’s the only one who fought out there,” someone else commented.

“Runner-up: no one qualified for this award,” a fan joked.

One more shared, “He’s been carrying this team for the last three years. It’s a well-deserved honor.”

It wasn’t Mahomes’ best statistical season across the 14 games he started, but he was on pace to surpass last year’s numbers fairly easily.

He completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while rushing 64 times for 422 yards and five scores.

The three-time Super Bowl champion remains hopeful that he’ll be back on the field for Week 1 next season. Regardless, he’s already making progress in his rehab and appears to be in a good spot early in the offseason.
