It wasn’t long ago that NFL legend Cam Newton, who regularly appears on ESPN’s First Take and hosts his own show, 106 & Sports, made comments earlier this season calling the New England Patriots “fools gold.” At the time, his remarks sparked major backlash, despite the team going 14-3, winning the AFC East, and reaching the Super Bowl.

On Monday, following New England’s ugly 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night — a game in which the Patriots didn’t score until the fourth quarter — Newton revisited his comments. He once again reiterated that the Patriots are “fools gold” and went further, saying he believes there are eight AFC teams better than New England going into next season.

“When I say fools gold and everybody gets to saying certain things — oh, you hating, you bitter, you this, you that — it was inevitable,” Newton said on 'First Take' Monday. “When you start to see that you’re beating everybody, they’re not at their best. You’re finding ways to scratch and claw to win ... You’re fighting little bro, you’re not fighting big bro. Matter of fact, you’re finding the third cousin, you’re not fighting the head honcho.”

Backlash ensued again for Newton, who didn’t seem to give the Patriots much credit, despite widespread praise for Drake Maye and the season he had in his second year in the NFL.

“Cam is just salty that he sucked with the Patriots and they benched him for Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe,” one fan wrote.

Another added, “How is this clown on TV? He doesn’t even know what he’s really saying.”

A third commented, “Fools gold is Cam Newton getting to the Super Bowl and not being able to beat a totally washed Peyton Manning. Not diving on a football. And having his career spiral to a bitter end.”

One fan shared, “What did I just watch??”

Another remarked, “Cam Newton may genuinely be the worst hire in ESPN history.”

Newton hasn’t bought into the Patriots’ hype all season, and it appears he’s still not convinced — despite having spent the 2020 season, one of his final in the NFL, with the Patriots after a long and successful career with the Carolina Panthers.
