The Buffalo Bills upgraded the receiving room just before the start of free agency by acquiring WR D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a second-round pick in the upcoming draft.

Now, the Bills are making more room in the receiving core by cutting ties with veteran WR Curtis Samuel. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter first reported the release.

Samuel had just one year remaining on his three-year, $24 million contract that he signed with the team in 2024. The move to release him now clears up $6.05 million in cap space for Buffalo before free agency.

The Bills signed Samuel in hopes that he would become a dynamic playmaker to support QB Josh Allen in the Buffalo offense. However, Samuel dealt with several different injuries over his two seasons in Buffalo and had a minimal impact on the team.

Last season, the 29-year-old receiver played in just six games, making seven catches for 81 yards and one touchdown. In 2024, he caught 31 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown.

The Ohio State product was a second-round pick in 2017 by the Carolina Panthers, where he played for four seasons. He also spent three seasons with the Washington Commanders.

Samuel was one piece of a heavily questioned receiving room that the Bills needed to address this offseason. By acquiring Moore, Buffalo provided Allen with a new top target, and the team could look to add another in the draft this April.

Keon Coleman could be the next receiver the Bills look to move on from after facing multiple disciplinary issues last season and clashing with the front office.

The Bills have a long way to go to rebuild the offense under new head coach Joe Brady, but moving on from a free agent mistake is a good start for the team.
