The Buffalo Bills ended their latest season with another disappointing playoff exit, this time a crushing overtime loss that came on a field goal by the Denver Broncos.

Several days after losing the AFC Divisional Round game, 33-30, the Bills reportedly fired Sean McDermott as their head coach. McDermott was critical of the officiating after the loss, even suggesting he was taking a stand for Buffalo.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the news on Monday morning following an exciting weekend of games, including two overtime thrillers.

The Bills initially hired McDermott in January 2017, and he coached the team to an overall regular-season record of 98-50 over nine seasons.

The team was 8-8 in the playoffs, with only two trips to the AFC Championship game during his tenure, both featuring Josh Allen as quarterback.

Despite McDermott's winning seasons, the organization seems to feel that change is necessary, as McDermott had so many winning seasons with none of them resulting in a trip to the Super Bowl. Their AFC Championship losses came at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

This postseason featured no Mahomes due to the Chiefs' disappointing season. There was also no Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens or Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in the Bills' way.

Saturday's loss came in overtime to young quarterback Bo Nix and Denver. It also featured a controversial interception call, which will likely be a highlight for months.

McDermott called out the referees for ruling the play an interception and not reviewing it to ensure they got it right.

"I'm saying it because I'm standing up for Buffalo, damn it. I'm standing up for all of us because what went on that is not how it should go down, in my estimation. These players spent three hours out there playing their guts out," he said at his postgame press conference.

He stood on that as his main talking point after the loss, indicating he even called a timeout to see if they could review the play. He also said the loss wasn't on one player, as there were things they all could have done better.

McDermott will now move on, as will the Buffalo Bills. They'll enter the search for a new head coach, now that top names like John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski seem unavailable.
