Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen appeared to hit his head hard on the turf at NRG Stadium as he went to the ground during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans. Allen laid on the field after the hit as the Bills training staff attended to him.

Since the Bills were facing a fourth down, Allen and the offense came off the field and Allen went into the blue medical tent to be evaluated. The Bills offense quickly got the ball back after Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud fumbled on a sack and the Bills recovered.

Bills backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky initially went out with the offense and handed the ball to James Cook for their first play of the series. After that one play, Josh Allen returned to the game and finished the rest of the loss.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said Monday that Allen had been cleared to return to the game and is not in concussion protocol.

"Josh was cleared and he went back in the game," McDermott said Monday at his press conference. "That's what I know from our medical staff on the sideline."

"Big shot to the chest, and rolled my ankle there. They flagged me for hitting my head, but felt good enough to go back in the game," Allen told reporters on Sunday after the game.

Allen has taken numerous big hits over his career but rarely misses time on the field. Allen has not missed a game since his rookie season when he missed four games because of an elbow injury.

Allen has even sustained an injury to his non-throwing hand during the Bills' Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals, but that did not cause him to miss any games.

The Bills have now lost their last two games, falling to the Texans and Baltimore Ravens. Allen had one of his least efficient days as a passer — with leading receiver Khalil Shakir out because of injury — completing just 30 percent of his passes for 131 yards and one touchdown.

The coaching staff has come under fire for the Bills' end of game clock management, which resulted in the Bills punting and allowing the Texans the opportunity to score the game-winning field goal in the final minute of this game. This blown situation prevented the Bills from finishing the comeback attempt, and handed them their second loss.

The Bills will look to rebound in Week 6 when they take on the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.
