The Buffalo Bills made the surprising decision to part ways with head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons with the organization, following another postseason disappointment this year.

McDermott compiled a 98–50 record during his tenure and won five AFC East titles, but his teams went just 8–8 in the playoffs, including multiple AFC Championship Game losses, never managing to get the Bills into the Super Bowl.

Just over a week after the decision, the Bills have reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with a familiar face: offensive coordinator Joe Brady, one of the most sought-after names on the coaching market.

Brady brings a strong offensive background and a proven ability to work with quarterback Josh Allen, who likely had significant input in the hiring process.

The Bills also interviewed Brian Daboll, Allen’s former offensive coordinator early in his career, and Davis Webb, a former backup quarterback in Buffalo who has since coached under Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos.

Now, Brady faces the pressure of getting the Bills over the postseason hump, as regular-season success alone won’t be enough — otherwise, McDermott would still be in charge.

What is Joe Brady's coaching history?

Brady first burst onto the scene as a rising young coach during his time with the LSU Tigers’ 2019 national championship team, serving as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. He played a key role in the offense’s success, which featured standout talent such as Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson.

Brady was named the 2019 Broyles Award winner, given to the nation’s top assistant coach, and he was widely credited as the architect behind LSU’s high-flying offense that went undefeated and dominated virtually every opponent that season.

He then served as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers from 2020–2021 before landing in Buffalo, where he has spent the past four seasons.

Who else is on the Buffalo Bills coaching staff?

The Bills’ current coaching staff, now under Brady, will be something to watch closely as the team searches for a new offensive coordinator to replace him in that role. However, it’s unlikely Brady will give up play-calling duties.

Beyond that, Buffalo made no major staff changes following McDermott’s dismissal. At minimum, the Bills will need to fill two coaching vacancies, as offensive line coach Aaron Kromer retired and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor left to take the same position with the Miami Dolphins.

On the defensive side, Bobby Babich has served as defensive coordinator over the past two seasons. While Brady could choose to make a change, Babich has overseen a productive defense, all things considered, and if he returns, it’s likely much of his defensive staff will remain in place.
