Weeks after his future in Chicago was openly in question, Kyler Gordon delivered a return for the record books.

The Chicago Bears nickel cornerback logged three sacks, four total tackles and two forced fumbles on just 16 snaps in a 31-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons. That made Gordon the first defensive back since 1985 with at least three sacks and two forced fumbles in a single game.

Gordon shrugged off the outside noise.

“I mean, it is what it is,” Gordon said. “I can’t control what someone else says.

“But at the end of the day, I’m going out there and do my job and do [it to] my best ability and be the best player and the leader at my spot.”

Asked on Sept. 1 where things stood with Gordon, his own general manager, Ryan Poles, said, “I don’t know,” though he remained hopeful.

A right calf injury held Gordon out of every team drill during the offseason. Gordon carried a PUP designation for the whole of camp, and his later shift to reserve/PUP guaranteed he’d sit out a minimum of four games.

Durability has dogged him. Gordon, 26, had suited up for five of the Bears’ last 25 games, yet no slot corner in the league is paid more.

His three-year, $40 million extension, signed on April 15, 2025, averages $13.3 million per year and includes $31.25 million in guaranteed compensation.

Todd Bell, in 1983, was the last Chicago defensive back to post a three-sack game. Gordon is only the third Chicago player to pair three sacks with two forced fumbles in a game since the league began officially tracking sacks in 1982.

Chicago’s defense needed the jolt. It was giving up 6.2 yards per play before his return, 30th in the NFL, and an Atlanta offense averaging 361.8 yards per game finished with 257.

Bears coach Ben Johnson said the staff kept Gordon’s workload light to ease him back. Sixteen snaps were enough for three sacks.
