The Kansas City Chiefs’ season concluded on Sunday with a 14–12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, finishing the year 6–11 overall and missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons.
After a dominant decade, the Chiefs now face major offseason decisions regarding both their coaching staff and roster, with the biggest question coming from veteran tight end Travis Kelce and what he plans to do about his NFL future as he considers retirement at age 36.
“Who knows?” Kelce said after Sunday’s loss. “Either it hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time. Last year was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to kind of give this one year a shot. We’ll see.”

On Monday, while speaking to the media, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who is set to return for the 2026 season, addressed Kelce’s imminent retirement decision.
“We’ll get to all that. Right now, you’ve got a little bit of time before all that stuff needs to take place. That’s what’s real right now. I know everybody wants an answer right this minute… We all love Trav. Trav can still play… I just know there’s time,” Reid said.
Kelce contemplated retirement after losing in Super Bowl LIX last season, but he mentioned that the decision to return was made quickly. Now, after his 13th NFL season, he faces another tough choice, even while remaining one of the league’s most productive tight ends.
He finished this season with 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns — an increase in both yards and touchdowns from last year. However, the status of Patrick Mahomes’ health to start next season could be a key factor as Kelce weighs his options as a now unrestricted free agent.
