The San Francisco 49ers have one of the NFL's most talented rosters, but if you're choosing the one non-quarterback they plain can't afford to go down, again, in 2026, it's Christian McCaffrey.

When he's healthy, everything about the offense becomes scary. That's good.

Kyle Shanahan has built one of football's most creative systems. McCaffrey is the player who brings it to life. He's much more than a running back. He can line up in the backfield, catch passes like a receiver and turn routine plays into huge gains. He does it regularly, too.

That's what makes him so difficult to defend.

Every time McCaffrey is on the field, defenses have to account for him before the snap. Very few players force opponents to constantly rethink their defensive approach the way he does.

His versatility also creates good opportunities for everyone around him. The attention McCaffrey commands opens throwing lanes, creates lighter boxes for the running game and gives Shanahan even more freedom to hide what the offense is about to do.

Other players should get kudos, though, too. Fred Warner remains one of the NFL's premier linebackers and the unquestioned leader of San Francisco's defense. His instincts, communication and ability to impact every level of the field make him one of the most valuable defensive players in football.

Then there's Trent Williams, who continues to set the standard at left tackle.

Still, McCaffrey changes games in ways few guys can.

The 49ers have stars across the roster, but no player touches the football more or influences the offense more consistently than McCaffrey. When he's healthy and playing at his best, San Francisco becomes one of the toughest teams in the league to defend.
