Star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk landed on the reserve/left team list in December 2025 when he stopped showing up to the San Francisco 49ers facility for rehab and cut off communication with the team.

Near the end of last season, general manager John Lynck said Aiyuk played his final snaps with the 49ers, but the team held onto hopes of his potential return this offseason with the thought of trading him. After no deals materialized, Aiyuk's future with the team looked murky at best.

This weekend Lynch was asked about the wide receiver and the veteran general manager side-stepped the question.

"Brandon is on a left squad designation," Lynch said. "As such, he's not on our 90-man roster. And I'm personally and we as an organization are going to focus on the players that are here. And so, I don't have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well."

Because Aiyuk has the "left team" designation, he must apply to the NFL for reinstatement to the league before any further transactions could take place.

However, he hasn't taken the necessary steps to do so. He's made it abundantly clear this offseason he wants to play for the Washington Commanders, but he would have to be released by the team – after he applies for reinstatement to the league.
