The injury bug continues to bite the San Francisco 49ers.
Just days into training camp, the 49ers learned they would be without one of their key depth pieces in running back Jordan James, who suffered some fractured ribs, which is expected to sideline him for a significant amount of time.
The 22-year-old James, who appeared in three games last season as a rookie, was expected to be the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey after the team parted ways with Brian Robinson in March. However, those plans have now been derailed — at least temporarily.

San Francisco has rookie Kaelan Black and Isaac Guerendo still on the roster, and it’s looking at adding a third backup to the mix.
The 49ers worked out three RBs — Khalil Herbert, Raheem Blackshear, and Owen Wright — on Thursday, according to Pro Football Talk.

...
Of the three, Herbert is the most experienced. He spent the first three-and-a-half seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears, followed by stints with the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets.
The 28-year-old Herbert has rushed for 1,957 yards and nine touchdowns, along with 54 catches, 316 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Blackshear spent the first three years of his career with the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 203 yards and three touchdowns on 52 carries. He hasn’t played since 2024, however,
Conversely, Wright appeared in one game with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, didn’t play in 2024, and appeared in here games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.
