The San Francisco 49ers are moving on from linebacker De'Vondre Campbell after his refusal to play in Thursday night's game, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced. The team is currently working out the manner of Campbell's departure, whether that be his release or suspension.

"His actions from the game are not something you can do to your team or teammates and still be a part of our team," Shanahan said. "We're working through the semantics of (the process) but we'll handle the situation accordingly."

Campbell refused to participate in the divisional matchup with the Los Angeles Rams after finding out he was no longer in the starting lineup. The linebacker left to the locker room in the fourth quarter to express his opinion.

While the 49ers turned to Campbell as injuries to linebackers piled up, he told the coaching staff he didn't want to play.

"People noticed, but when someone says that you move on. You don't want to deal with that anymore," Shanahan said postgame. "I haven't lost anybody, that's someone who doesn't to play football. It's pretty simple."

Dre Greenlaw returned to the lineup after missing 10 months recovering from a torn Achilles. Greenlaw made his 2024 debut in Week 15, and his long-awaited return meant Campbell lost his starting spot.

On the Nightcap Show with Chad "OchoCinco" Johnson and Shannon Sharpe, the former NFL stars discussed Campbell's actions.

"As a player on the team, you got to understand your role," Johnson said. "He on a one-year deal? And he had the nerve to walk off the field? You got to be that boy to pull some s--t like that. You got to be Fred Warner or somebody like that."

Sharpe also added: "He's probably going to get cut. You got to realize you got released from the Packers. [The 49ers] threw you a lifeline. [Dre Greenlaw] was coming back. In my 14-year career, I can honestly say I've never seen someone that refused to go into the game."

This season has unfolded into a nightmare for the 49ers. San Francisco has lost two running backs in Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason. The offense also lost its best receiver in Brandon Aiyuk after he tore his ACL/MCL in Week 7. Beyond injuries, the 49ers have suffered tragedies off the field.

Campbell's refusal to play is just the latest debacle of the 2024 saga in the Bay.
