Ohio State legend Urban Meyer offered a bold suggestion for current Buckeyes coach Ryan Day based on the games he schedules and how they could impact his College Football Playoff situation.
Right now, there's no question whether Ohio State is a CFP team, as they've been ranked No. 1 for the majority of the college football season. On Saturday, they'll participate in a huge matchup against No. 2 Indiana for the Big Ten Conference Championship.
While both teams seem secure in making the 12-team playoff bracket, other teams on the outside looking in are trying to make their cases for the CFP. Among them are the Miami (FL) Hurricanes and the Texas Longhorns, the latter of which played the high-ranked Buckeyes to start the season and lost.

While on Outkick's "Dan Kalkich Unfiltered," Meyer offered some bold advice for Ohio State coach Ryan Day regarding next season's schedule. Weighing in on the Texas CFP debate, Meyer said there's "no upside" to scheduling specific games and that it could even hurt a team.
“If I’m right now, Ryan Day, I don’t play that game next year at Texas,” he suggested, adding, “I’m the head coach, you just gave me an extension. I’m gonna go to the AD and say, ‘I’m not playing that game. You figure it out. You’re the AD.’”
Meyer indicated that Ohio State should play Old Dominion, Kennesaw State, and Indiana State on their schedule to ensure it has wins. He said when he was a coach, he would have "one big dog, one medium dog, and one small dog" on the team's schedule.
Currently, coach Ryan Day and Ohio State are scheduled to face the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, as part of next season's schedule. That brings into question whether or not that game could hurt or help Texas, much like it seemed to hurt Texas this season, giving them an early loss, which is one of their three this season.
Texas has a strong CFP argument about its body of work this season, as it played five ranked teams on the schedule, including out-of-conference Ohio State. That was a 14-7 season-opening loss for Arch Manning and company. They also suffered losses to Florida and No. 5 Georgia, contributing to their 9-3 overall record.
Multiple individuals, including current coaches and analysts, want a change in how things work with the CFP rankings and system. Some have suggested adding play-in games or expanding the bracket beyond 12 teams.
