The No. 4 UConn Huskies men's basketball had an opportunity to clinch a share of the Big East regular-season title on Saturday afternoon against Marquette Golden Eagles men's basketball, who sit near the bottom of the conference standings, but they were ultimately upset 68–62.

In the final moments, the Huskies had a chance to tie the game when UConn guard Silas Demary Jr. drove to the rim but missed a layup through contact that wasn’t called.

The no-call led head coach Dan Hurley to erupt at the referee, even giving the official a slight bump and making contact, which immediately resulted in an ejection.

While the NCAA may not review the incident, the Big East Conference almost certainly will, as the conference has strict sportsmanship protocols and a formal Code of Conduct.

In the past, several coaches have faced punishment for criticizing officials, and making contact with one during a game that leads to an ejection could very well result in something for Hurley just days before both the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

Whether Hurley could face a suspension or simply a formal fine remains unclear. Given his history of criticizing officials, the conference could choose to treat the situation more seriously.

Many on social media weighed in on the moment, including Stephen A. Smith, who believed Hurley was justified in being upset — though the contact with the official warranted the ejection.

“Coach Hurley just got ejected with 1.0 left. He was right to be furious on the no-call,” Smith said. “The ejection was justified because you can’t touch the referee, but that should’ve been a foul for Demary, who would’ve had a chance to tie the game at the FT line. Should’ve been called.”

Other fans and members of the media across the college basketball world also chimed in on social media about the type of punishment Dan Hurley might face.

“Guessing a suspension will accompany that ejection for Dan Hurley. Can’t make contact with an official,” one fan said.

Someone else added, “Dan Hurley will certainly have a suspension coming for contact with an official.”

Another person wrote, “Suspend him for the conference tourney. How else will he learn that is not acceptable behavior? Act like an adult.”

“Hurley gonna be suspended for Game 1 of the Big East Tournament lol,” another fan commented.
