UCLA has made history after reaching No. 4 in this week's AP Poll.
Per ESPN Insights, the Bruins have reached their highest ranking since the 2001 season. At that time, UCLA was at No. 4 after beating California in late October. However, the Bruins lost the next four games and finished the season 7-4 and unranked.
This year, UCLA is 9-0 and one of just two teams in the FBS that are undefeated. The other undefeated team is Utah, which is ranked No. 2 in the country and also 9-0.

UCLA has seen a big turnaround this year with new head coach Bob Chesney. In the previous two seasons, the Bruins won a combined eight games under then-head coach DeShaun Foster (and interim head coach Tim Skipper in 2025 after Foster was fired).

How has UCLA had success this year? The program is one of the most balanced teams in the Big Ten, ranking third in scoring offense (33.6 points per game) and scoring defense (14.1 points allowed per game). Running back Wayne Knight has been statistically the best back in the conference, tied for first in rushing yards (789) and ranked first in rushing touchdowns (13).
If UCLA continues to win, it will clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time in school history. After UCLA's win over Minnesota on Saturday, Chesney was asked about where the Bruins will be placed in the new College Football Playoff Ranking.
“Winning this game, just win this game. No thoughts. We don’t watch," Chesney said. "I told our guys, don't worry about watching this four-week drama series. That’s gonna be this show that they're gonna put out there. That's not what we're here for. We're here to focus on getting the work and being the best that we possibly can be."
