Purdue has made a coaching change after losing to Maryland at homecoming this weekend.

On Sunday, the school announced it has parted ways with defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Kevin Kane. The defense has struggled all season, allowing 32.3 points per game and 415.4 yards per game. Purdue ranks 17th in the Big Ten in scoring defense and last in total defense.

After the Boilermakers' 34-29 loss to Maryland, head coach Barry Odom believed a change on defense was needed, according to Tom Dienhart of Gold and Black. Kane was hired from Minnesota to replace Mike Scherer before the 2026 season. This was Kane's second stint with Purdue, as he served as the team's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Purdue Will Owe Kevin Kane $1 Million in 2027

Dienhart said that Kane signed a two-year contract with Purdue. He is being paid $850,000 in 2026 and will be owed $1 million next year.

The hiring of Kane was one of the many coaching changes Purdue made after the 2025 season. In December, the Boilermakers added Zach Crabtree as the new offensive line coach; Cornell Ford and Bilal Marshall took on different roles with the team, and defensive backs coach Charles Clark was promoted to defensive passing game coordinator.

Purdue is currently 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten. After getting a win against Minnesota on Oct. 10, the Boilermakers have lost their last three games and have surrendered over 30 points in each loss.

Odom is in his second season as Purdue's head coach. He previously spent time as the head coach of UNLV (2023-24) and Missouri (2016-19).
