March is always an unpredictable and chaotic time of year for college basketball. Stars are born, Cinderellas are crowned, and front-runners are vulnerable to getting tripped up.

That’s what happened in the SEC tournament on Friday, as Ole Miss knocked off Alabama in a shocking upset. While the loss won’t knock the Crimson Tide out of contention for the NCAA tournament, it did make Division I history.

The Rebels entered the tournament as the No. 15 seed. They became the first team seeded 15th or lower to reach the semifinals of any Division I conference tournament ever. Now, they're just two wins away from stealing a bid in the big dance.

Despite finishing the regular season with a 12-19 record and a 4-14 record in SEC play, the Rebels have caught fire at the right time. In the tournament, Ole Miss has knocked off No. 10 seed Texas, No. 7 seed Georgia and now No. 2 seed Alabama.

You truly can’t count anyone out in a tournament in March, but Ole Miss would surely have to win the SEC tournament to steal a bid in the March Madness bracket.

The Rebels will face No. 3 seed Arkansas on Saturday with a spot in the tournament championship game on the line. The Razorbacks won’t be an easy team to stop, as SEC Player of the Year guard Darius Acuff Jr. scored 37 points on Friday in a win over Oklahoma.

Should Ole Miss survive on Saturday, they would face either No. 4 Vanderbilt or No. 1 Florida in the championship game.

What started as a season to forget for the Rebels could quickly turn into a run to remember if they can pull off an unlikely feat in the next two games.

If any team could steal a bid, it would likely be a team led by Chris Beard, who has plenty of postseason success. He took Ole Miss to the Sweet Sixteen last season and guided Texas Tech to the Final Four in 2019.
