The Ohio State Buckeyes led by two touchdowns after the first quarter Saturday.

By the time they scored again, the Oregon Ducks had put together 38 unanswered points and taken control at Ohio Stadium.

The 41-28 home loss dropped Ohio State to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play. It also followed a 30-18 defeat at USC, giving the Buckeyes consecutive losses entering the final three games of their regular season.

Former Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas made clear that those results fell short of the expectations he associated with the program.

Thomas wrote on X Saturday night, “We don’t sign up at Ohio State to lose back to back like that.”

His post focused on the consecutive defeats without naming a coach or player.

Thomas played a substantial role on Ohio State’s 2014 national championship team, catching 54 passes for 799 yards and nine touchdowns that season. He finished his college career with 113 receptions, 1,602 receiving yards and 18 touchdown catches.

The New Orleans Saints selected him 47th overall in the 2016 NFL draft. He later earned the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year award for the 2019 season, when he caught 149 passes.

Oregon scored 17 points in the second quarter and another 14 in the third before extending its lead to 38-14 in the fourth.

Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola described the preparation behind the turnaround.

“We were confident in our plan,” Raiola said. “We saw seams everywhere in their defense when we were game-planning for them.”

Raiola finished with 257 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Oregon running back Dierre Hill Jr. added 75 rushing yards and two scores as the Ducks improved to 6-3.

Ohio State freshman quarterback Luke Fahey completed 36 of 50 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns. Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith caught seven passes for 133 yards and a score, but both of Ohio State’s second-half touchdowns came in the final four minutes.

The Buckeyes return home against the Northwestern Wildcats on Nov. 14. After allowing 71 points across the past two losses, they have three regular-season games left to halt their slide.
