Notre Dame's upcoming matchup against No. 1 Miami has become one of the biggest games remaining in college football, particularly for the Fighting Irish.

Miami is the hottest team in the country and undefeated at 7-0 with wins at Wake Forest, at Clemson, and against Florida State and Pittsburgh. Notre Dame, meanwhile, is trying to recover from a damaging 28-24 loss at BYU two weeks ago, with the Irish entering the back half of the season at 6-1. Notre Dame hosts the Hurricanes on Nov. 7.

FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt recently dropped his projections for the 12-team College Football Playoff, and boldly predicted that Notre Dame will beat Miami and claim the No. 4 seed even with its loss to BYU. His bracket has Indiana earning the No. 1 seed after winning the Big Ten, followed by SEC champion Georgia at No. 2 and Ohio State at No. 3 after losing the Big Ten title game to Indiana.

Klatt then has the Irish at No. 4, with Miami dropping to No. 5 despite winning the ACC championship. Utah is No. 6 as the Big 12 champion, Texas is No. 7 at 10-2, and Ole Miss sits at No. 8 after losing the SEC title game. UCLA, BYU, LSU, and Oregon State round out the bracket at Nos. 9-12.

Notre Dame began its season 6-0, putting itself in position for a top CFP spot. But the loss to BYU was bad as the Irish let a late lead slip away and missed a chance to strengthen their resume against a ranked opponent. They still have yet to beat a ranked opponent this season.

Notre Dame still has five games left: Navy on Saturday followed by Miami, Boston College, SMU, and Syracuse. The Mustangs are also sitting No. 19 in the latest AP poll, but the Hurricanes matchup is the clear headliner and the final result could have massive implications for both teams.

Last season, the Irish finished 10-2 but were left out of the playoff, with Miami earning the final at-large berth due to their head-to-head win over Notre Dame at the beginning of the year. The irony of the Irish potentially being left out again this year after losing to the same team would be hard to ignore.

The Irish are currently listed as slight home favorites, but the Hurricanes have two potential Heisman candidates in Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney, and have won all of their games this season, most of which by double digits.
