As the College Football Playoff gets ready to debut on Friday, Dec. 19, there's plenty of talk about the state of college football. Between the NIL (name, image, likeness) and the NCAA Transfer Portal, there's criticism that things have gotten out of control in the college football landscape.
Amid the discussion on the college football landscape, Nick Saban let his thoughts be known about the current state of the sport during an appearance on ESPN’s "College GameDay," and he has a solution.
The former Alabama coach supported the idea of having a single commissioner with authority over the entire sport, kind of like the Roger Goodell of college football.

“I think that we need to have a commissioner who’s kind of over all the conferences, as well as a competition committee who sort of defines the rules of how we’re going to play the game. Because that’s what we don’t have right now,” Saban said, according to The Clemson Insider.

“We used to have contracts, for coaches and for players, that defined what’s your academic responsibilities, when can you transfer, what’s your obligation to the school," he continued. "We don’t have that now. And if you really don’t support that, you’re kind of supporting a little bit of anarchy, which is what we have right now, whether it’s coaches or players."
Saban added, "'So, I think having a commissioner, national commissioner, having a governing body, certainly would enhance [the game]. Because I do think that the College Football Playoff has kind of camouflaged some of these issues, because there’s so much interest in college football because of the playoff."

Saban would actually make a good commissioner, too. During an appearance on his "House Rhules" podcast on Thursday, Dec. 11, Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule said he thought Saban would be a perfect fit.
“I can tell you this, I know most coaches, I know me, if that was one the table, I’d certainly vote yes,” Rhule said. “Because he’s been in the trenches, he has experience, he has the vision. And you also have to have someone who has the guts and the toughness to make hard decisions, because you’re not going to make everyone happy. That’s why the NFL has Roger Goodell, he’s going to do things, even if people don’t like them, he’s going to do what’s right for the game. And they protect the league."

He added, “For us, our conferences are our leagues, so everyone is protecting their own conference, which is why things end up being maybe a little disjointed as a result,” Rhule concluded. “So, shoot, come on Coach Saban, do it, man. We need you.”
