Bryce Underwood's time as Michigan's starting quarterback could be over.
The former five-star recruit was benched at halftime in the Penn State game last weekend, after completing just 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards and throwing two interceptions. True freshman quarterback Tommy Carr then stepped in and led the Wolverines to a 21-18 win over the Nittany Lions, finishing 5 of 7 for 47 yards passing, along with 36 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
Carr helped spark the comeback with efficient passing and key runs, including a 12-yard score that helped seal the win. Now, Michigan appears ready to turn to the freshman once again. According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Carr is expected to start against No. 6 Indiana on Saturday.

Carr taking over as the starter not only puts added pressure on Underwood but also puts the spotlight on Carr's deep family roots in Ann Arbor. His grandfather, Lloyd Carr, coached Michigan to the 1997 national championship.

Lloyd Carr coached the Wolverines from 1995 to 2007, compiling a 122-40 overall record and leading Michigan to its 11th national title in program history. He also won five Big Ten championships, six bowl games, and remains the third winningest coach in Michigan football history, behind legends Bo Schembechler and Fielding H. Yost. Tommy's father, Jason, also played quarterback at Michigan, while his brother CJ plays quarterback at Notre Dame.
Tommy, meanwhile, is suddenly set up for the biggest opportunity of his own young college career. The Saline, Michigan, native was a four-star recruit and the No. 15 overall quarterback in the 2026 class by 247Sports, choosing Michigan over offers from Miami (Ohio), Iowa State, Rutgers, and Wake Forest, among others.
Tommy spent the first half of the season backing up Underwood but now he finds himself with a golden opportunity to continue the family legacy in Ann Arbor. Through two appearances this season, after previously playing in the UTEP blowout earlier in the year, he's gone 7 of 9 for 70 yards and one passing touchdown, along with 54 rushing yards and one rushing score.
The Hoosiers are the defending champions and 6-1 on the season, with their only loss coming last weekend against Ohio State. It's a difficult test for Carr, but if he can put together a strong showing, it would put him in a good position to remain Michigan's starting quarterback for the rest of this season.
