The Miami Hurricanes put together an extraordinary run to the national championship, defeating three teams in the College Football Playoff as underdogs along the way. But on Monday night, they fell just short against the Indiana Hoosiers, losing 27‑21 after a late interception sealed the game.

Coming up one drive short is tough, but Miami will now turn its focus to the offseason. The program will lose key pieces, including quarterback Carson Beck, along with several pass rushers and offensive linemen. Wide receiver Malachi Toney and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. — both anchors of the team’s offense this season — are expected to return.

In a powerful message after the loss, legendary Miami wide receiver Michael Irvin, the team’s honorary captain for the game, said the defeat will serve as fuel for the program’s future.

“That’s going to be the difference, because those kids right here now saw what it’s like to be in your own home city and on this stage,” Irvin told On3. “And they’ll feel that, and they’ll want to recreate this again.”

Irvin also stressed that this level of success should now be the standard under head coach Mario Cristobal, who, like Irvin, was part of Miami’s national championship-winning teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

“We should be here every year,” Irvin said. “We’ve got Mario, we’ve got the players, we’ve got the guys. These guys have tasted this. They’ve experienced it at this level in their stadium. No doubt in my mind, we’ll be back here. I told the guys, stay out here, because sometimes you’ve got to feel this pain to reach your greatest self — and they felt it today.”
