More News: CFP Committee Explains Controversial Notre Dame-Alabama Decision
Head coach Josh Heupel should be looking for a quarterback who can lead the Volunteers back to the CFP in 2026.
Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News Sentinel named Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey as a potential option for UT. The native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, could be an intriguing pickup for the Volunteers.
However, if Minchey goes to Knoxville, the young quarterback would likely have to win another battle in training camp.
"Minchey showed promise at Notre Dame, but he was squeezed out of competitions for the starting job," Sparks wrote. "In three seasons (including a redshirt year), he completed 23 of 29 passes for 212 yards. And he rushed for 96 yards and two TDs.
"Minchey has played only 10 games and never started. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. If Tennessee added him from the portal, he would not arrive as the surefire starter. Instead, he would compete with MacIntyre and Brandon for the starting job and round out the quarterback group."
Minchey entered the transfer portal after freshman quarterback CJ Carr cemented his place as Notre Dame's starter for seasons to come. Minchey is a talented dual-threat quarterback, and he'd offer Heupel an explosive dynamic for the offense in 2026.
