There’s no team in men’s college basketball playing better right now than the No. 1 ranked Duke Blue Devils, who sit at 28–2 overall and have already clinched the ACC regular-season title with one game remaining.
That final game comes Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium against their rival, the No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels, who beat Duke on Feb. 7 thanks to a game-winner by guard Seth Trimble.
Duke is coming off a dominant 93–64 win over the NC State Wolfpack, and while speaking to the media on Thursday, head coach Jon Scheyer shared some emotional personal news, revealing that his grandmother passed away the night before their win over the Wolfpack.

“If I could just talk about two things real quick ... You don’t get seniors very much and we have three that we are honoring [Saturday],” Scheyer said while first wanting to celebrate the team’s seniors ahead of their final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
He then mentioned the passing of his grandmother.
“Then just me personally to follow up on the NC State game. I lost my grandmother the night before the NC State game. My grandmother — she was Nana to us — was 95 years old and lived an amazing life. She would stat every game when I was younger. She had this little notepad and she’d track points, assists, and there would be the normal box score, but I would always go by her stats. She also tracked hustle points.
“So the thing I was saying to our team, I thought we had a lot of hustle points Monday night, and that’s something she always tracked. That was very meaningful to me and my family, so I just want to shout her out and shout out our seniors.”
Clearly, Scheyer’s players honored her the right way, and they’ll have another opportunity to do the same down the stretch of the season by recording some “hustle points” against North Carolina this weekend.
From there, Duke will turn its focus to the ACC Tournament and ultimately March Madness, where the Blue Devils are firmly in the hunt for a national championship.
