The Indiana Hoosiers are losing an established defensive lineman to the portal. Defensive tackle Hosea Wheeler is entering the transfer portal, according to Pete Nakos of On3. Wheeler is a redshirt senior, but he gets one more year of eligibility, since he spent the 2021 season with Sacramento City community college.

Wheeler was a key part of Indiana’s national title push. He had 31 tackles, four tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. He was more used as a rotational piece on the Hoosiers’ defensive line, but he contributed mightily to an Indiana defense that was dominant against the run. They ranked third in the nation with 79.7 rushing yards allowed per game.

Before his time with the Indiana Hoosiers, Wheeler was with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. He was a standout player at WKU, with 118 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four sacks, two blocked kicks and an interception in three seasons with the Hilltoppers.

He was a member of the second-team All-Conference USA in 2023 and first-team All-Conference USA in 2024. It remains to be seen where he will go, but he could go to a Group of 5 school or a school in need of defensive line help.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti has a habit of looking for Group of 5 contributors in the transfer portal, considering he was a Group of 5 coach himself before joining the Hoosiers. He was head coach of the James Madison Dukes from 2019-23, leaving the Dukes with a 52-9 record. On his national champion squad, wide receiver Elijah Sarratt, running back Kaelon Black and edge rusher Mikail Kamara transferred in from James Madison.

Indiana has a few holes to fill, with quarterback Fernando Mendoza, running backs Black and Roman Hemby and wide receivers Sarratt and Omar Cooper more than likely declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft. Their transfer class is currently seventh in the league, highlighted by standout TCU quarterback Josh Hoover.
