A former NC State quarterback said he would love to see the team hire Philip Rivers as its new head coach.

On College Sports Radio on SiriusXM, Mike Glennon shared his thoughts on Rivers being mentioned as a potential replacement for Dave Doeren, who was fired this week.

“I didn’t grow up an NC State fan, but when I got to campus, I quickly learned there’s a Mount Rushmore of NC State, and it’d probably be Jim Valvano and a few others. Definitely on there, is Philip Rivers, and he may be number one,” Glennon said.

“Like the people around Raleigh and NC State, he is on a pedestal that I don’t even know if Jimmy V is on. That they love this guy, and to raise money, I don’t think there is another person in the country right now that could raise money for NC State fans like what Philip Rivers would do.”

Philip Rivers Interviewed to Be Buffalo Bills' Head Coach

Rivers was a standout player at NC State, throwing for 13,484 yards and 95 touchdowns from 2000 to 2003. During his final season, Rivers was selected as ACC Offensive Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year.

After NC State, Rivers played 18 NFL seasons and threw for 63,948 yards and 425 touchdowns for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts. He then became a high school football coach in Alabama.

Rivers interviewed for the Buffalo Bills head coach position before Joe Brady was hired. So it's not a surprise that he would be considered for the NC State job since the team last won the ACC in 1979.
