Florida State President Richard McCullough has shared more information on Mike Norvell being fired as the football team's head coach.
In a press conference on Sunday, McCullough admitted that Florida State took feedback from fans and social media before relieving Norvell of his duties. On Saturday, the Seminoles suffered a 36-24 home loss to Clemson to fall to 3-5 on the year.
“Yesterday was a bit of a defining moment for me,” McCullough said.

Norvell was in his seventh season as Florida State's head coach, and it's been a mixed bag. After two consecutive losing seasons, the Seminoles went 10-3 in 2022 and 13-1 in 2023. Norvell won the ACC in 2023 and was named ACC Coach of the Year that same season. In the next two seasons, Florida State would win just a combined seven games.

Florida State Legend Takes Over for Mike Norvell
"We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program," McCullough said in a statement. "We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best. We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program."
Norvell joined Florida State after having a successful run at Memphis. In four seasons with the Tigers (2016-19), Norvell went 38-15 and won the American Athletic Conference in 2019.
With Norvell fired, McCullough named Rick Stockstill as the interim head coach. Stockstill is in his third season on the Seminoles' coaching staff after 18 years as the head coach at Middle Tennessee State. He played quarterback at Florida State from 1977-81.
