Michigan hired Kyle Whittingham as its new head coach, but former interim head coach Biff Poggi revealed another coach was in the mix to win the job.

During an appearance on "The Stadium & Main" show earlier this week, Poggi, a former assistant and interim head coach at Michigan, said he was being considered for the head coaching job. He thought the Wolverines were going to hire him.

“I was a finalist, it came down to me and Kyle,” Poggi said.

Poggi then said that he had four interviews that went well. And when he didn't get the job, Poggi said that it was difficult to accept that he wouldn't be with the team going forward.

“It was hard because I really thought I was going to get it,” he said. “I had four interviews; they all went really well, I was getting really positive feedback from the search guy. It was all going very well. We were also the players’ favorite, and that doesn’t always mean that’s the right thing. But what was disappointing was that I wasn’t going to be around those kids anymore.

“And then you quickly transition to, ‘Well, too bad. Who cares? You’re an old fart, who cares about what you think? You’ve got to support this program now because these are the kids you care about and you can’t be, like, putting a divorce into the family. You’ve got to jump all in and support this guy. And that’s what I tried to do.”

Poggi was named Michigan's interim head coach when head coach Sherrone Moore was suspended early in the season. Poggi won the two games and was named interim head coach again at the end of the season after Moore was fired. He coached the team in the Citrus Bowl before Michigan began its coaching search.

Whittingham joined Michigan after spending 21 seasons as the head coach at Utah. The Wolverines are currently 5-3 and 2-3 in the Big Ten.
