There's arguably no coach in college football whose job is in more jeopardy than Kalen DeBoer. When you're the head coach at Alabama, that comes with the territory, especially after going 20-8 across your first two seasons at the helm. But even with the Crimson Tide off to a 2-0 start in 2026, fans are already calling for his job.
Alabama got off to a slow start in Saturday's win over Kentucky, heading into halftime down 17-13. Things clicked in the second half, as the Tide scored 32 unanswered points to win 45-17. But fans saw enough in that rocky first half to start pushing for one man to replace DeBoer at Alabama: defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

Several fans jumped online to make their case.
"For future reference. One of my first choices if DeBoer gets fired is DC Kane Wommack. Just watch his energy on the sidelines. The effort the defense plays with. That’s what Bama needs man," one user wrote.
"Kane Wommack for head coach if DeBoer leaves!" another commenter wrote.
"Kane Wommack is Top 2 AND HE’S NOT 2!!!! And it’s not even close!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 If DeBoer ever gets fired, I know who I want as our next HC. In the 3 years he’s been here, our games have been won because of defense. Without question," one other added.
"Kane Wommack deserves to be the head coach. He has the most dawg in him Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb gots to go," another replied.
"Can we name Kane Wommack HC at Alabama? Dude has the fire! DeBoer? Not the guy," another fan commented.
"HIRE KANE WOMMACK AS HC RIGHT NOW," another user replied.

Wommack was hired as Alabama's defensive coordinator in January 2024. Before that, he was the head coach at South Alabama from 2021 to 2023, going 22-16 and winning the Sun Belt's West Division title in 2022, becoming, at the time, the youngest head coach in FBS at just 33 years old. Earlier in his career, he built a strong reputation as one of college football's up-and-coming defensive minds, serving as defensive coordinator at Indiana, South Alabama, and Eastern Illinois.
A former fullback at Arkansas and Southern Miss, Wommack comes from a coaching family. His father, Dave, spent more than 35 years coaching at the college level, including five seasons as defensive coordinator at Ole Miss.
Alabama's defense has thrived under Wommack, ranking among the best in the SEC over the last few seasons. His name has surfaced in connection with head-coaching openings elsewhere, and if DeBoer can't start putting together more convincing wins, it might not be long before Wommack is seriously considered as his successor in Tuscaloosa.
Unfortunately, the schedule doesn't get any easier for DeBoer and the Tide. They'll host Florida State and South Carolina in the coming weeks before a daunting SEC stretch: at Mississippi State, vs. Georgia, at Tennessee, vs. Texas A&M, and at LSU.
