Santa Cruz loses one of its best scorers, but clearly the team didn't think he had enough upside, at age 26, to be worth squandering an opportunity at future draft equity.

Per Evan Sidery of Forbes, Santa Cruz has parted ways with athletic draft bust Kevin Knox, shipping him to Windy City in exchange for a 2026 first-round G League draft pick.

The New York Knicks used the No. 9 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft to select the 6-foot-8 Knox after an All-SEC First-Team season with the Kentucky Wildcats. Knox was drafted ahead of future Knicks stars Jalen Brunson (the No. 33 pick out of Villanova), Mikal Bridges (the No. 10 pick, also out of Villanova) and Mitchell Robinson (the No. 36 pick), as well as 2025 MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (the No. 11 pick, also out Kentucky).

Knox spent parts of four seasons in New York. He fell out of favor with head coach Tom Thibodeau soon after Thibodeau's arrival in 2020-21. After having played for 75 and 65 games across his first two seasons as a legitimate rotation player (albeit on lottery-bound New York teams), Knox was reduced to a part-time player role under Thibodeau by 2021-22, appearing in just 13 games and averaging a scant 3.6 points in 8.5 minutes before the Knicks flipped him to the Atlanta Hawks. He failed to make much of an impression with the Hawks, averaging just 2.7 points in 6.6 minutes a night.

Kevin Knox's Journeyman NBA Career

Knox split the 2022-23 season between the Detroit Pistons and Portland Trail Blazers, and seemed to show signs of promise in Portland especially, where he averaged 8.5 points and 3.3 boards in 17.1 minutes per. On a near-historically bad Pistons squad the next season, Knox suited up for just 31 games (11 starts).

Last year, Knox impressed while playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors, averaging 21.8 points, 8.0 boards and 2.4 dimes across 28 contests. Golden State inked him to a pair of 10-day deals starting in February, then promoted him to a rest-of-year deal in March. Injuries even prompted the Warriors to make Knox a brief part of their playoff rotation, as he notched 14 points, four boards and two dimes during a Game 5 clash with the Houston Rockets.
