The Minnesota Timberwolves have suffered a significant setback just one week into the NBA season, with their biggest star expected to miss an extended period.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Anthony Edwards will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee and is expected to miss up to two months.

The news comes just one day after Edwards delivered a remarkable 47-point performance in Minnesota's 127-125 overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite battling discomfort in his right knee, Edwards played 41 minutes Monday, shooting 19-of-34 from the field while adding four rebounds and four assists.

The 25-year-old had been listed as questionable before the game because of ongoing knee issues but was ultimately cleared to play.

Edwards has dealt with discomfort in his right knee dating back to last season, making the latest development particularly concerning for a Minnesota team with championship aspirations.

The four-time All-Star had been playing some of the best basketball of his career to open the 2026-27 campaign. Through four games, Edwards is averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting better than 48% from the field.

He opened the season with 45 points against the Miami Heat and helped lead Minnesota to three consecutive victories before Monday's loss to Cleveland.

Now, the Timberwolves must prepare for an extended stretch without their leading scorer and offensive centerpiece.

Minnesota entered the season looking to build on consecutive Western Conference finals appearances, but Edwards' absence creates an immediate challenge for a team hoping to remain among the conference's contenders.

The injury will likely place additional offensive responsibility on LaMelo Ball, while players such as Jonathan Kuminga, Jaden McDaniels and Ayo Dosunmu could be asked to take on larger roles.

Minnesota's next matchup comes Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors, beginning what could be a difficult stretch without its franchise player.

Although the reported recovery timeline leaves open the possibility of Edwards returning before the end of December, his availability will ultimately depend on how his knee responds following the procedure.

The Timberwolves have demonstrated their ability to compete with the NBA's best teams in recent seasons but maintaining that standard without Edwards will present one of their toughest challenges yet.

With their championship ambitions still intact, Minnesota must now find a way to stay competitive while prioritizing the long-term health of its most important player.
