Luka Doncic has heard the criticism surrounding his defense throughout his NBA career.

Now, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar believes he's taking significant steps toward changing that narrative.

Following the Lakers' 131-125 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, Doncic addressed his defensive reputation and explained why he believes he's become a more complete player.

"Obviously, I'm not the best defender in the NBA, but I think this year I really took a step forward," Doncic told the Los Angeles Times.

"Obviously, people are going to talk what they want to talk [about] me. ... But I know, and my team knows, that I think I'm better this year. And that helps the whole team, I think."

Doncic backed up those comments with one of the most impressive all-around performances of his career.

The 27-year-old finished with 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals while drawing three offensive fouls against Toronto.

According to ESPN Research, Doncic became the first player to record at least five steals and draw three charges in the same game since player tracking began during the 2013-14 season.

His performance also drew praise from Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who highlighted Doncic's effort and communication on the defensive end.

Redick said Doncic has been "awesome" defensively, particularly when guarding opponents with the ball and communicating with teammates.

Lakers center Walker Kessler also praised his teammate's effort, emphasizing the impact Doncic's defensive commitment has on the rest of the roster.

"Luka doesn't get enough credit for his defense," Kessler told ESPN.

The defensive performance came alongside another dominant offensive showing.

Doncic connected on eight 3-pointers against Toronto, continuing an impressive scoring stretch that has established him as the NBA's leading scorer early in the season.

He is averaging 37.7 points per game, including three performances of at least 40 points in his last four outings.

Doncic has spent much of his career establishing himself as one of the NBA's most gifted offensive players, but questions about his defensive effort have remained a consistent part of the conversation surrounding his game.

His performance Sunday offered a glimpse of the progress he believes he's made, showing that his impact can extend well beyond scoring and creating opportunities for teammates.

For the Lakers, that development could prove significant as they look to establish themselves among the NBA's top contenders.

And while Doncic may never be considered the league's best defender, he's making it clear that he intends to be known for more than just his offense.
