Doncic's latest milestone came during the Lakers' 138-117 win over the Miami Heat on Monday. He finished with 42 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds, extending his run of scoring at least 37 points to five consecutive games.
That stretch has also put him in rare company.
According to ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin, citing StatsWilliams:
"Luka Doncic is the first Lakers player to score 20-plus points in the 1st half in five straight games since Kobe Bryant in 2007"
Doncic had already delivered a spectacular performance against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. He recorded 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals to lead Los Angeles to a 131-125 victory.
After the game, Doncic explained why he welcomed the defensive attention.
“I think today we're just glad they blitzed me almost every time, you know. Just glad a double. I think we moved the ball great. I think also we missed a lot of open shots, but we got, what, 140 points, which is amazing,” he said, via @PurpGoldLakers.
Doncic has also pointed to improvements in his defensive approach. Following the Raptors win, he acknowledged that he still has room to grow but believes he has taken a step forward.
With the Lakers now 6-2, Doncic's historic start is giving the team an early foundation to build on.
