The Los Angeles Lakers received some encouraging news regarding one of their promising young players as rookie Cameron Carr continues working toward his return.

Carr took a significant step toward returning to the court Tuesday, participating in a full practice with the Coachella Valley Lakers, Los Angeles' G League affiliate, as he continues recovering from a right oblique strain that has kept him sidelined since the preseason.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick confirmed the development before Tuesday's 136-129 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, explaining that the team wanted to see Carr participate in a full practice before considering his return.

"He was able to do a full practice today," Redick told reporters. "Today was a good step for him."

Carr has not appeared in a game since Oct. 6 after suffering the injury following two preseason appearances.

The rookie showed flashes of his offensive potential during his preseason debut against the Sacramento Kings, finishing with 19 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Carr shot 7-of-13 from the field and connected on three of his seven attempts from beyond the arc. He followed that performance with five points and two steals against the Golden State Warriors before being sidelined.

While the injury has prevented Carr from building on those early performances, Redick emphasized the importance of ensuring the rookie is physically prepared to return.

"Well, we needed him to be able to get through a full practice. So that's probably a very important step," Redick said.

The Lakers coach explained that Carr had been able to maintain some conditioning during his recovery but needed to demonstrate that he could handle the physical demands of playing again.

Los Angeles has faced a demanding early-season schedule, making it difficult for the team to conduct regular practices.

Carr's participation with Coachella Valley provided an opportunity to evaluate his progress without disrupting the Lakers' preparation for upcoming games.

Although Redick did not provide a specific return date, completing a full practice suggests Carr is moving closer to making his regular-season debut.

The rookie could also see significant playing time with Coachella Valley once fully healthy, allowing him to continue developing while remaining available for opportunities with the NBA club.

For a Lakers team looking to build depth throughout the season, Carr's progress represents a positive development as Los Angeles continues evaluating its young talent.
