Heading into the start of NBA free agency on Monday night, the New York Knicks still do not have a new head coach. After firing Tom Thibodeau following the season, the process of finding a replacement has not gone smoothly.
With that being said, the Knicks will need to figure out what direction they want to go from a roster perspective.
Most of the core is already intact. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart are a great five to lead the way. However, New York could use more help for them throughout the roster.

It seems unlikely the Knicks are going to make massive moves. They could consider trading one of their core pieces, but it seems much more plausible that they look to bring in better depth.

To that end, New York has been connected to an intriguing sleeper guard.
According to a report from Ian Begley of SNY, the Knicks are showing interest in free agent point guard Tyus Jones. He played the 2024-25 season with the Phoenix Suns.
Jones would be a quality addition for New York. He may not bring star power to the roster, but the Knicks don't need any more star power. They need quality players who can perform well in the role they're given.
A new coach coming to New York suggests a change in philosophy. Thibodeau relied heavily on his starters. He didn't usually dig deep into his bench.
Whoever replaces Thibodeau may believe differently. In order to accommodate a new coach, a better bench might need to be in place.
During the 2024-25 season with the Suns, Jones played in 81 games and made 58 starts. He averaged 10.2 points, 5.3 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game, while shooting 44.8 percent overall and 41.4 percent from the three-point line.

At 29 years old, Jones is still in his prime. He would be a quality backup behind Brunson.
There are likely to be other teams with an interest in signing Jones as well. Depending on the price tag, he would be a perfect target for the Knicks to improve the roster without shaking the core up.
Only time will tell, but Jones will be a name to watch closely as free agency gets underway.
