Trent Grisham came to the New York Yankees in the trade that brought Juan Soto to the team. Grisham was not great last year, but this season is a different story.
Grisham is having a career year, just before he enters free agency. He entered Monday with a career high in home runs, slugging percentage and OPS. He has made 97 starts for the Yankees and has put himself in a strong position before free agency.
While he has played great for the Yankees this year, he may not be back with the team next season. Grisham is essentially the Yankees' fourth outfielder, and the 28-year-old is likely going to be replaced by Spencer Jones being called up soon.

Jones and Jasson Domínguez will fight for the third outfield spot if the Yankees bring back Cody Bellinger. Bellinger will likely hit free agency after opting out of his deal, and the Yankees will reportedly make him a priority in free agency.
Paying Bellinger would make it more likely that the team lets Grisham walk. Grisham spoke on his admiration for the Yankees and how he would enjoy continuing his career in New York, but also acknowledged the uncertainty free agency brings.
"I like this place a lot," Grisham said to the New York Daily News' Gary Phillips. "I like the guys we have in the clubhouse. I like New York. There's a lot of things I like about it, so we'll see."
The "we'll see" by Grisham at the end of his statement indicates that he knows the ball is in the team's court. The Yankees will have to make a couple of key decisions before extending a contract to Grisham. What the team thinks of Jones' readiness for the big leagues and how aggressive it is in retaining Bellinger will be key for Grisham's future in the Bronx.
