The New York Yankees scratched right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole from his scheduled start on Tuesday due to general body fatigue, the team announced. In his place, Will Warren will start and make his Major League Baseball debut.

This news comes shortly after reports that the Yankees were making a trade, sending left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson to the Houston Astros. In return, the Yankees are getting a minor league player and international bonus pool money, per Jack Curry of the YES Network.

The bigger news here is Cole, as it's never ideal to see the 33-year-old ace of the Yankees having a start skipped. However, he's just dealing with body fatigue, which means he should be ready to make his next scheduled start.

Cole missed the first few months of the season due to elbow discomfort, and returned in mid-June. He's made seven starts this season, sporting a 5.40 ERA across 35 innings of work.

Who is Will Warren on the Yankees?

Warren is getting the opportunity to make his MLB debut in Cole's place. The 25-year-old was drafted by the Yankees in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

Warren entered the season as the Yankees' No. 7 prospect per MLB Pipeline, but has struggled in Triple-A this season, sporting a 6.11 ERA across 20 starts. His strikeout numbers have been impressive, as he's punched out 115 batters in 95.2 innings of work.

He'll have a tall task in his MLB debut, though, facing one of baseball's best lineups in the Philadelphia Phillies.

Yankees Trade Analysis

As for the trade, the Yankees move off of Ferguson, whom they acquired this past offseason in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ferguson struggled in New York, sporting a 5.13 ERA across 33.1 innings in 42 appearances.

He's now joining the Astros, who will look to get him back to his pre-Yankee ways. With the Dodgers, Ferguson had some impressive seasons, most notably in 2021, when he had a 1.82 ERA across 34.2 innings. In 2023, he had a 3.43 ERA across 60.1 innings pitched.

Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers Competing For Tigers' Jack Flaherty

As for the rest of the Yankees' deadline, they're reportedly among the contending teams interested in Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty.

Flaherty, 28, could wind up being the best starting pitcher traded at this deadline if Tarik Skubal and Garrett Crochet stay put.

The Yankees are reportedly not involved in the Crochet sweepstakes, though, as the teams "don't match up" in a potential trade.
