The New York Yankees have been one of the most active teams in baseball with the waiver wire heading into spring training.

That philosophy held true on Wednesday when the Yankees reportedly made another claim. Aside from bringing back Cody Bellinger, it almost matches what the Bronx Bombers have done for most of the offseason.

According to international sports reporter Francys Romero, the Yankees claimed outfielder Yanquiel Fernandez off of waivers from the Colorado Rockies. Romero reported the news on X Wednesday afternoon.

Fernandez is a corner outfielder that recorded just 138 at-bats last season for the rebuilding Rockies. The newest reported member of the Yankees organization slashed .225/.264/.348 last season in Colorado with four home runs and 11 RBI. He signed with the Rockies in 2019 as an international free agent before eventually making his debut on July 2.

This is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Yankees. By claiming him off of waivers, general manager Brian Cashman does not concede anything other than the small contract that Fernandez will likely sign. With spring training just around the corner, Fernandez has an opportunity to provide depth to the organization.

While the trio of Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge make up the starting outfield, Fernandez could put himself in position to be the team's fourth or fifth outfielder. Jasson Dominguez would be the fourth outfielder on the opening day roster if he is not moved before then. Nothing has been confirmed on that front yet, but rumors continue to float around as teams start to hit the panic button right before spring training.

If Fernandez does have to start the season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he could certainly use this spring to prove to the Yankees that he deserves to stick around and deserves to be called up if an injury occurs.
