The Boston Red Sox were once one of the most famously tortured franchises in all of sports, but they'd sneakily been torturing the New York Yankees for two decades.

After coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the 2004 American League Championship Series, the Red Sox not only broke their World Series curse that year, but went on to defeat the Yankees in the teams' next two postseason battles in 2018 and 2021.

On Tuesday night, Boston put itself on the brink of eliminating the Yankees for a fourth consecutive time. But this time, the Yankees battled back, sending Boston home with 4-3 and 4-0 victories the next two nights.

It took a complete team effort for the Yankees to get the job done, highlighted by brilliant late-game athleticism on Wednesday from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a virtuoso performance from rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler on Thursday.

Yankees captain Aaron Judge sounded off on the triumph over Boston after the series, noting that the Red Sox had taken nine of the 13 games between the two clubs in the regular season as well.

“We were a confident group, going into this Red Sox series,” said Judge, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “They had our number all regular season, but we knew what we needed to do. This group knew what was ahead of us.”

Judge had never known postseason success against Boston, as a member of the 2018 and 2021 teams. But this was his first meeting with the Red Sox in the postseason after being named captain before the 2023 season, and he's happy that the narrative is already shifting.

“That’s a good one,” Judge said. “They’ve had our number in the regular season and in the last couple of postseasons, from ’21 to ’18. But I like this one.”

The Yankees will move on to face another American League East rival in the Toronto Blue Jays, with 11 more wins separating them from a long-awaited World Series championship. That's Judge's ultimate goal, but beating the Red Sox sure is sweet.
