The Detroit Tigers are looking to reload after some big expectations ended in a disappointing playoff exit, and their latest move was a bit of a surprise.
The Tigers led the American League for much of this past season before a sudden collapse pushed them into a wild card matchup with the rival Cleveland Guardians. They won that series before falling in the division round to the Seattle Mariners.
Now the team will be taking a close look at its roster to see where it might improve toward its first World Series championship in more than four decades. And it has already made a couple of transactions involving long-time New York Mets catcher Tomas Nido.

On Thursday, the Tigers signed Nido to a minor league contract, according to the MiLB.com transaction log. That move marked a surprising turn for the Tigers, considering Nido had cut ties with the team earlier in the month by electing free agency.
“Nido is a classic glove-first backstop, with only a .215/.249/.310 slash line to show for his 982 PA in the majors (895 of them with the Mets),” MLB Trade Rumors’ Mark Polishuk wrote when Nido elected free agency. “The 31-year-old will surely land another minor league deal this winter with another team looking for experienced catching depth, though it’ll likely require another injury further up the depth chart for Nido to get any significant MLB playing time in 2026.”
Surprisingly enough, that new minor league deal has come as a reunion with the Tigers. But Nido is best known for the eight major-league seasons he played with the Mets. Just three years ago, Nido appeared in 98 games for the Mets, racking up 31 total runs on the year.
The Tigers’ major-league backstop role seems to be filled by Dillon Dingler for next season with Jake Rogers set to serve as the backup. But should the team see an injury at the position, Nido could be called up to catch for the likes of Tarik Skubal now that he is back with the Tigers.
