As the Detroit Tigers begin their quest to win their first American League Central title since 2014, they'll have some interesting roster competitions to watch develop.

One spot in particular where the Tigers have some uncertainty is in the outfield, where only Riley Greene and Parker Meadows seem like locks to start. Returners Wenceel Perez, Jahmai Jones, and Matt Vierling are in the mix as well, as is recent free-agent signing Austin Slater.

Add one more name into the mix: former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Cal Stevenson.

According to the official transactions log, the Tigers signed the 28-year-old Stevenson to a minor-league contract. The transaction was backdated to Wednesday, but it did not appear on the log until sometime early this week.

Stevenson, who had to work his way through the minors as a 10th-round draft pick for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018, has just 52 major league games to his name, despite appearing on a roster in each of the past four seasons. He debuted with the Athletics in 2022, then played briefly for the San Francisco Giants in 2023 before spending the past two seasons in Philadelphia.

After batting .250 without a home run in his 35 plate appearances for the Phillies, Stevenson was released last August. His best traits are his speed and on-base abilities, as he's posted a .405 on-base percentage and 137 steals in 611 career minor-league games.

Though his odds are likely long to crack the Tigers' opening day roster, Stevenson is a nice depth piece for Detroit to have around if he begins the regular season in Triple-A.
