The Boston Red Sox should now be scrambling after reportedly losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs.
Craig Breslow and the organization clearly overestimated how much Bregman wanted to be in Boston despite things going well last season between the two sides. Bregman, however, reportedly received 175 million reasons to head to the Midwest.
There are still a few strong options available to replace Bregman, and Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic believes one player the team should pursue is free agent third baseman Eugenio Suarez.

"The Red Sox have been tied to Suárez for months, with a league source noting the team pursued him at the trade deadline last summer with the intent of shifting him from third base to first base," McCaffrey wrote. "Now with an opening at third sans Bregman, the Red Sox may shift their sights again to the slugger. Suárez, however, is a subpar defensive third baseman and posted minus-5 Outs Above Average at the spot last year. ... The Athletic projects him to sign for three years and $69 million, a deal that would offer the Red Sox the payroll flexibility in money and years they seem to be pursuing."
Suarez would certainly be the next-best option for the Red Sox as he hits for power and consistently gets on base. While his defense is questionable at times, Boston can find a way to make it work with Trevor Story manning shortstop.
Losing Bregman is certainly a big blow to the Red Sox, but it's not quite the end of the world. They have options available, including Suarez to make it work and make a push for the playoffs without him. The path to get there might just be a little more difficult now.
