One question has encircled the Boston Red Sox this spring. With the acquisition of star infielder Alex Bregman, theories started to arise over where the Gold Glove winner would play the field. Many assumed Bregman would take second base, thanks in part to some statements from Red Sox manager Alex Cora during the offseason.
"(Bregman) hasn't played second base in the big leagues." Cora said in February. "I do believe he can be a Gold Glove second baseman, too."

Despite Cora's comments, rumors quickly spread that Bregman would be taking over third base from franchise cornerstone Rafael Devers. Despite initial pushback from Devers on moving to designated hitter, the 28-year-old begin trialing at DH. As for where Bregman and Devers would play in the regular season, the Red Sox insisted on waiting to make an official decision. On Wednesday, a decision was finally announced.
"Alex is going to play third. Raffy's going to DH," Cora said on WEEI. "We all are in the winning business. He understands that."
The writing has been on the wall for some time, but the word is official from the team now. Just two years after signing his 10-year, $313 million extension in Boston, Devers will begin the season as the Red Sox's DH. It is unclear if Devers will spend some time at third during the season, or if he will reclaim the position if and when Bregman opts out of his contract with the Red Sox.
Devers' AAV of $31.35 million will make him the second-highest paid DH in Major League Baseball behind the New York Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton.
