The Boston Red Sox have seen many changes come to their roster in first half of this season.

From acquiring All-Stars in the offseason such as Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet, to calling up the No. 1 prospect in baseball, to sending another top prospect back to Triple-A, to suddenly trading homegrown superstar Rafael Devers, Boston's roster has been amorphous. Ahead of Friday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Red Sox announced another change to the lineup.

"The Red Sox (on Friday) placed INF Marcelo Mayer on the Bereavement List," the team announced on Twitter. "To fill his spot, Boston recalled INF/OF Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester."

There was no announcement regarding how long Mayer will be on bereavement leave, though teams typically allow three to seven days maximum.

Nick Sogard was slated to play third base on Friday. In 14 games with the major league club this season, Sogard has slashed .245/.302/.306 with a .608 OPS.

Mayer, who had played second base during the Red Sox's last series in Anaheim, was replaced at the position by David Hamilton on Friday.
