The Boston Red Sox should look to make some big moves this offseason after their embarrassing postseason series loss to the New York Yankees.

Due to this, the Red Sox are already being linked to one of baseball's top free agents as the offseason gets started.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Jim Bowden named the Red Sox as one of the best fits for third baseman Teruaki Sato this offseason in free agency.

With the Red Sox needing more offense, it would make a lot of sense if they pursued Sato this offseason. The 27-year-old has been a superstar in the Nippon Professional Baseball league for multiple years now and would have the potential to be a major pickup for Boston if signed.

Sato's numbers from this season show just how talented a player he is. In 143 games with the Hanshin Tigers this campaign, he posted 39 home runs, 40 doubles, 106 RBI, and a .306 batting average. This is after he had 40 home runs, 102 RBI, and a .277 batting average in 139 games for Hanshin during the 2025 season.

With NPB numbers like these, Sato is exactly the kind of fascinating international free agent that a team like the Red Sox should pursue. If he translated his NPB success over to the MLB level, he would be a huge addition to the Red Sox's lineup.

However, Sato is expected to land a major payday. Bowden projected that the star slugger will land a five-year, $180 million contract in free agency. Yet, with how well he has played overseas, the Red Sox could very well be a team willing to give him such a big contract.
