The Red Sox's bullpen depth will be tested right away.

Hours before Thursday's season opener against the Texas Rangers, Boston placed reliever Liam Hendriks on the 15-day injured list due to previously undisclosed right-elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to March 24.

Hendriks spent all of last season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, so it's fair to be concerned about Thursday's developments. The 36-year-old entered spring training camp as a contender for the closer job but lost to Aroldis Chapman after posting a 9.95 ERA in 6 1/3 innings.

Hendriks' spot on the 26-man roster was filled by righty Cooper Criswell, who was previously expected to be the odd man out.

Given his struggles throughout the spring, Hendriks probably wasn't in line for high-leverage innings early in the season. Righties Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten still project as the top setup men behind Chapman.

As for additional closer options, rookie Luis Guerrero could be a candidate for promotion after impressing for much of the spring. The hard-throwing righty was developed as a closer in the minors and likely will see opportunities in the big leagues at some point this season.
