The Philadelphia Phillies are optimistic they can stick around the top of the National League East until longtime ace Zack Wheeler returns from injury. Cristopher Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo will headline the rotation in his absence.

However, that doesn't mean the Phillies don't want him back as soon as possible. Everyone affiliated with the organization knows how impactful he is to the roster, and it will be a boost whenever he returns fully from the shoulder surgery that he had in September to remove a blood clot in his shoulder.

On Thursday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic provided an update on Wheeler's recovery timeline.

"He threw again on Wednesday from 120 feet and reported no issues," Gelb wrote. "Wheeler is excited about his progress. He could soon be throwing from a mound. A return sometime in late April or early May remains a realistic target. Wheeler could accelerate things if he continues to feel strong."

If the Phillies had known at the end of last season that Wheeler could return by the beginning of May, they likely would have gladly accepted that date. Wheeler would only miss approximately six weeks of the season, and he could return at an optimal time to lead the way to a third-straight division title.

Wheeler's progress is one to keep an eye on, as Gelb mentioned his return date could move up if he continues reporting no issues. While the veteran will obviously want to be aggressive and return as soon as possible, the Phillies will ultimately make the final call on just how aggressive they get.

The Phillies are hopeful top prospect Andrew Painter can help hold things down until Wheeler returns, but things continue to trend upward with the veteran's recovery.
