The Philadelphia Phillies came up short in the postseason again this season, and they're headed for another long offseason.
The Phillies need to make some major additions, especially considering MVP candidate Kyle Schwarber and All-Star pitcher Ranger Suárez are set to become free agents. The Phillies will likely only have the money to sign one of these two.
Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently projected that Suárez would sign a massive six-year contract worth $160 million this offseason. At this price tag, the Phillies are almost certainly out on the star pitcher.

"He is not often mentioned among the game's elite pitchers, but Ranger Suárez has been excellent for the Phillies since becoming a full-time member of their starting rotation, and his age and consistency make him the most attractive candidate for a deal longer than five years among the starting pitching class," Reuter wrote Thursday. "This is a slightly lower AAV than the predicted contract for Framber Valdez, but the highest overall payday thanks to that sixth year."
With Andrew Painter seemingly ready for the big leagues, it seems clear the Phillies are going to let Suárez go.
But the lefty seems bound for a huge payday on the open market. Last season, the New York Yankees gave Max Fried over $200 million. Suárez might not get that kind of deal, but he could land something close for fewer years. Either way, he's going to get paid the money he deserves.
