The San Francisco Giants' front office underwent a dramatic overhaul when president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was replaced with Buster Posey, a franchise icon three years into his retirement as a player.
Posey, a first-time executive, said that hiring a new general manager will be among his first tasks. Pete Putila, who was named GM under Zaidi two years ago, will not return in the same role.

Could an experienced GM who recently landed on the executive free agent market fit the bill?
Jon Heyman of the New York Post linked former Minnesota Twins general manager Thad Levine to the Giants' job, a logical move for a veteran executive who saw plenty of success at his last stop.
"The Giants are looking for a GM," Heyman reported. "One name that makes sense is Thad Levine, the well-regarded exec who departed the Twins."

The Twins announced Oct. 4 that Levine would not be returning to the organization in 2025, as his contract was not renewed. President of baseball operations Derek Falvey was retained on a new contract; the two had worked together as the team's top executives since 2017.

During that time, the Twins won three American League Central titles and reached the postseason as a Wild Card in 2017.
In 2023, Minnesota ended a 19-year drought without a postseason victory by beating the Toronto Blue Jays in a two-game AL Wild Card series. They were tied 1-1 in their AL Division Series against the Houston Astros before ultimately losing in four games.
Levine, 52, "is looking to pursue the types of larger major-league opportunities he's previously declined" according to a recent report by Dan Hayes of The Athletic.
Last year, the Boston Red Sox interviewed Levine for their top executive position but hired Craig Breslow instead. The previous year, Levine interviewed with the Tigers for their executive vacancy.
The Giants have qualified for the postseason just once in the last eight years, after winning three World Series championships in a five-year span (2010-14). In 2024, the Giants finished 80-82, fourth place in the division.
Their last playoff run saw San Francisco win the National League West with a franchise-record 107 regular season wins, only to be eliminated by the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in a five-game NL Division Series.
